I never could work out why I had a blanked off pipe coming out under and to the rear of the manifold. Turns out the engine which I though, according to 'the paperwork' was from a RR Classic is actually a discovery engine. So what would have been the radiator bypass through the cabin heater is blanked off and the need for a bypass is removed by not fitting a thermostat!! I could do some additional plumbing to connect it back into the heater return pipe but the correct manifold would be better.

Anyone got a spare 101 V8 inlet manifold?
